Company Introduction

Rare is a $20+ million, 100+ staff, fast-growing, international conservation organization that runs state-of-the art capacity building projects. Our work empowers local communities with the communication, outreach, technical intervention, project management and monitoring tools to solve their own conservation challenges. While Rare works on solutions to myriad conservation issues, our corporate strategy currently emphasizes the joint biodiversity and food security benefits achievable from community managed No-Take-Zones and Rights-Based-Fisheries management in the marine realm and Payments for Ecosystem Services approaches to effective management of terrestrial habitats. Rare's innovative social marketing strategies fuel projects located in more than 50 countries around the world. Named to Fast Company magazine's list of "Top Social Capitalists" four years in a row, Rare is committed to bringing a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity to solving one of this century's great challenges – changing human behavior to ensure sustainable natural resource management. All Rare projects are managed by local partners; our focus is on building community support for conservation and developing local communications capacity among the world's local environmental organizations. Rare has trained 257 local conservation leaders implementing dynamic change processes in 56 countries. Many of these "campaign managers" work for the largest and the smallest conservation organizations globally, including The Nature Conservancy, WWF, and Conservation International, as well as many government agencies. Rare has offices in six countries around the world in Arlington, VA; Philippines, Indonesia; the Federated states of Micronesia; Mexico; and China.
